Help Snippets

Most of the features on the site follow established web interfaces so shouldn’t need any explanation. However...

Calculator

Rather than have a separate page for the calculator it is located at the RH end of the menu bar as a dialog and is thus available to all pages in the Bob Graham Round section. This means you don’t have to swap backwards and forwards between pages to make changes. The data on the page you are on updates automatically when you submit the form.

The calculator form here and the BG Club calculator use the same server code so the two forms can share inputted values. However, this site also allows you to adjust the generated schedule if a particular leg or legs isn’t to your liking.

The data in the “Leg Time” column may be edited if you feel that a particular time is too quick or too slow: click in a cell in that column and adjust the value, the adjustment is automatically applied to the schedule as you modify things. Leg times that have an adjustment will have a dark orange background, the amount of adjustment is in the column to the right. Everything is saved automatically and will be used in the 42 Peaks and Route Notes pages. You may also add notes in the notes column, these are saved when you leave the cell. You may only use letters, numbers, spaces and common punctuation characters.

Your original schedule isn’t actually modified - your personalisations are held separately and applied to the generated schedule before being displayed. This means you don’t lose notes or adjustments if you decide to modify your schedule. However it also means that the same adjustments are applied to the new schedule. I.e. if you add 5 minutes to the time for the descent from Blencathra to Threlkeld then those five minutes are added even if you change your overall schedule from 23hrs to 18hrs.

The calculator on the BG Club website allows the user to copy a URL embedded with all the relevant values from the form to send to colleagues. There is an input at the foot of this site’s calculator form to import this and use those values in place of any set in the form itself.

Conversely there’s a box like the above on the Schedule page with the data from this site should you wish to use those values on the BG Club site - an “export facility” if you like.

Membership Search

The search facility on the membership lists page uses the API provided by the Bob Graham Club since it directly accesses the data collated and generated by them. It’s somewhat simpler than the search facility on the Club’s page but it’s more than enough for what I need it for.

Being so simple, the searches aren’t saved for future use.

Above the results table are a group of four charts that summarise the table data: direction choice; route choice; gender; previous attempts (2013 onwards).

Charts

As noted the site uses the data provided by the Bob Graham Club. The membership search on their site offers several charting options to analyse the data. However there are some things that they don’t cover.

The postcodes chart shows the distribution of members across either postal “Areas”,, these are the physically largest areas and are indicated by the first letter or two letters of the postcode. I.e. “CA”, “HX”, “BD”, etc. Areas are subdivided into “Districts” which are the the part before the space so “LA9” (Kendal), “CA12” (Keswick), etc.

Select Area/District then pick a year to view that data. Alternatively click on the “repeat” box and the code will cycle through every year from 1960 to the present but misses out the years with no successes.

The proximity chart lets you enter a post district and a radius and shows the totals of BG Club members in those post districts within that radius.

The assists chart is slightly different to what you might expect. It requires you to enter someone’s membership number and will show you which other members they have helped, i.e. it goes “away” from the selected individual. You may also choose how deep to keep doing this: who those people helped and who that second list of members helped. You need to be careful with this: at the third level things can get very messy especially if several people have helped a lot. Start with level one, try level two and if that looks “full” then leave it at that. Going to level three can end up with a chart that looks like frog spawn.
