Hard Rock
This table is a list of the routes in the coffee table book Hard Rock by Ken Wilson along with details of my ascents of them. It is grouped into the sections shown - click on one to open the listing for that area. Ken probably didn’t set out to provide a list for puerile tickers to aim for. Indeed his stated aim was to provide a snapshot of the best of what Britain had to offer and to encourage climbers to try different areas. The latter was because many climbing scenes were localised and parochial: those from N. Wales and the Peak in particular.
There is now a 4th edition of the book (printed 2020) which has a slightly different route list. Three routes, all in the Lake District, have been badly effected by rockfall: Deer Bield Buttress has collapsed completely, as has the upper half of North Crag Eliminate; the chockstone has fallen out of the Great Flake on Central Buttress. The first has been replaced by Totalitarian on Raven Crag, Thirlmere; NCE has been replaced by Nimrod on Dow Crag while a reasonable alternative up the front of the Great Flake has been found. Perhaps reflecting that no-one goes aid climbing anymore The Scoop and Kilnsey Main Overhang have been removed.
I have stuck with the original list since this was the one extant whilst I was climbing. I have climbed both Totalitarian and Nimrod so have the Lakes covered even with the new list.
The graphs below show summaries of successes by area and by year.
